About Jesse

Hello, and thanks for stopping by!

Jesse Michel, M.S., M.A.

Jesse Michel, Ph.D., M.A.

My name is Jesse Michel and I am passionate about three things: Sports, The Mental Game, and helping athletes and coaches get from where they are to where they want to go.  I have seen firsthand how “The Mental Game” can be an athlete’s best friend or worst enemy.  It is hard enough to compete against all the motivated and talented athletes and coaches standing between you and your goals. My passion is to help you develop the mental skills that top athletes use to perform more consistently, understand how The Mental Game impacts performance, and ultimately help you GET BETTER.  In my experience, benefits from sport participation are innumerable, but teaching concepts like “Knowing Your Why”, the “Growth Mindset”, and the “The Mind-Body Connection” are critical components for success on and off the field.  Self-awareness and self-regulation are the core principles of Mental Training, and my approach will help you leverage them and become a consistent top performer while your competitors fail to develop these vital areas of performance.

Originally from the San Fernando Valley, an area of Los Angeles known as a hotbed for athletic talent, I have been around great athletes and coaches all of my life.  I have been fortunate enough to compete and coach against some of the best athletes and performers in the world. As your Sport and Performance Psychology Consultant, I will combine real-life coaching and athletic experiences at the amateur, collegiate, and professional levels, a world-class sport psychology education, and training and mentorship by some the best Sport Psychology Professionals in the world to help you reach your goals.

I have a Ph.D. in Sport and Exercise Psychology and Masters in Counseling from West Virginia University, a M.S. in Sport Psychology from Ithaca College, and a B.S. in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego.  Over the past 10 years, I have had the privilege of working with thousands of athletes and coaches across the country.  I utilize the same scientifically proven strategies and techniques used by world-class performers to help athletes, coaches and teams reach their athletic and personal goals, improve consistency in performance, and gain a deeper understanding about how the most powerful tool we have, our mind, can impact our performance.  Previous clients include coaches, athletes, and parents from youth, amateur, college, recreational, and professional sports, and I have worked extensively with athletes and coaches in baseball, softball, golf, and swimming.  I have also worked with athletes from the following sports: billiards, boxing, track and field, cross-country, cycling, and lacrosse.

I believe personal development is vital for athletic success, and my client-centered philosophy on mental training includes the following six-step approach:

  1. Intake/Assessment
  2. Collaboration
  3. Identifying Mental Training Goals
  4. Developing a Personalized Mental Training Plan
  5. Implementing the Mental Training Plan
  6. Post-Program Evaluation

After the initial intake, we will evaluate your strengths and weaknesses of the Mental Skills that affect performance.  Based on our conversation, we will identify your target areas of improvement and develop a Personalized Mental Training Program (PMTP) for you to incorporate into your training regimen.  Your PMTP may include specific drills and strategies that improve specific target areas such as ‘Performing Under Pressure’, ‘Controlling the Controllables’, ‘Overcoming Obstacles and Learning From Failures’, ‘Maintaining Motivation’, ‘Coach-Athlete Communication’, ‘Consistent Confidence’, and the ‘Mind-Body Connection’.  We will track and measure your progress using a variety of evidence-based strategies and techniques proven to work for the top performers in the world! If you like what you read, have questions, or want to talk about Mental Skills Training, contact me anytime!
